Although most players prefer to choose a character that is strong in close combat, the mage is still a very popular choice among wow players. What the mage doesn’t have in his melee fighting skills, he more makes up for with his powerful magic. There is much more to the mage than just his ability to hurl fiery or icy death at their enemies. 

On top of their many abilities, they also have one of the highest damage potentials in the game, especially on higher levels. To balance this out, the mages have poor defense quality, much like the rest of the casters. They are restricted to cloth, and must rely on their magic to strengthen their defenses and help them get the distance they need from their attackers. They also rely on mana for their magic, which is a depletable resource.

Another important thing to note is that when choosing a race, keep in mind that a mage has only his magic to rely on. Therefore, you should choose a race that has high spirit and intellect.

-         Mages deal good damage from a distance.

-         Great single-target damage, and massive AoE (area of effect) damage.

-         Has the ability to open portals to all major cities. This can save you a lot of travel time.

-         Food and summoning abilities save a lot of downtime and money. Very helpful for groups

-         Utility spells like Counterspell, Remove Curse, Spellsteal and Polymorph and necessary for high leveling raiding and very helpful in small groups.

-         like all caster, the mage has low defensive abilities

-         Can be slow to level

-         Mana dependent – without mana, the mage is toast.

-         Certain debuffs that reduce casting speed or apply a silence affect can badly hinder a Mage.

The talents of the mage are separated into 3 different trees:

Arcane – The Arcane magic school is made mostly of utility spells (such as food and water conjuring), making it very useful to groups. However, in higher levels massive damage arcane spells are also available; Spells like Presence of Mind, Arcane Power and Arcane Explosion. The Arcane tree also features the all important mana regeneration abilities.

 
Fire – Fire is the burst damage tree. Fire spells cause massive damage. They are good for almost all situations: they have the range and damage efficiency essential for raiding, the burst potential desperately needed in PvP, and with some good spell rotation, a fire mage becomes an extremely efficient grinding machine. It is easy to see why choosing the fire tree is considered to be the easy choice.

Frost – The most mana efficient tree. Frost specializes in crowd control and snaring foes, and it can also do some decent AoE damage. It’s mana efficiency together with the survival abilities derived from its chilling abilities, make it a good choice for leveling and PvP. However, it does not provide the DPS that the Fire and Arcane trees can provide.
